It's about that time in
the Bluegrass again,
and what time might
that be? if you don't
know you might as
crawl back to your
cappuccino-drinking.
Broadway musical-
watching lifestyle.
That’s right, it's time
for Kentucky
Basketball, the only
event more
important than a
wedding. Trust me.
We had three older
brothers get married
and they all
purposely scheduled
the ceremonials in
the off-season.
There are a lot of
things to look
forward to this
season. but here are
the Top 10.

. You no longer have
to complain about
Saul Smith. I was a
fan of his, but I knew
way too many people
that made it their
goal to hate him.

. Ialways look forward
to Tubby Smith's
introduction. That's
the only time to hear
his full title.
"Orlando" is a really
cool name.

that you'll ever need.

7. Who isn't looking
forward to seeing
Matt Heissenbuttel
again? Well, at
least we like the
way his name
circumnavigates the
number on the back
of his jersey.

6. We have the coolest
mascots. Anybody
that would tackle
another team's
mascot is cool in my
book. The Gator was
asking for it.

. Cheerleaders!
That's really all I
need to say. It
wouldn't be the same
without them.

semester seeing that
there is nothing

waiting an eternity at
the ticket lotteries.

The sophomore guard from Lexington
played sparingly as a walkson freshman.

Heissenbuttel was able to walkvon much
because of his family's friendship with UK

coach Tubby Smith's family. Heissenbuttel
and his brother. Jack, played at Lexington
Catholic with Smith's youngest son. Brian.

Smith has never showed a reluctance to
play walk-ons. Former walk-on Steve Masiel-
lo started two games during his career and
helped the team when it lacked depth.

SEARS

Sticking with it: Sears granted Smith’s wish, gave up scholarship

(‘ory Sears could play at other college
basketball programs.

in fact. he could play on scholarship at
other programs. He was offered a scholarship
by Purdue coach Gene Keady and was re-
cruited by others.

Sears chose UK. though. because it was
home,

When UK coach Tubby Smith asked him
to give up his scholarship to keep the team at
the maximum of 13. Sears could have said no.
or he could have left for more playing time.

He will not see much floor at UK this sea-
son. but he does have a chance to go to the Fi-
nal Four and win a National championship.

Playing time lies on down the road.

great jump shooter . but he must improve his
speed. quickness and defense if he hopes to

nior year at Bowling Green High. where he
rewrote the record books.

Long range threat: Carruth possesses a deadly jump shot

Rashaad (‘arruth knows he can shoot
the ball.

(‘arruth made a name for himself at Oak
Hill Academy the same school that pro-
duced former (Tats Ron Mercer and Jules (‘a-
mara and (‘litf Hawkins by finding a home
outside of the three-point line.

His outside shooting ability garnered

him the reputation as the nation‘s top high
school shooter.

(‘arruth also has a reputation of not at-
tacking the basket. but he drove the lane
more frequently during the McDonald's High
School All-American game.

Carruth will give UK a deadly weapon
off the bench.

Adam (‘hiles was nearly an afterthought
at the end of last year's season.

Louisville had already signed his cross-
town Louisville Moore rival ('arlos‘ Hurt
the top recruit in Kentucky and {K had fo»
cused most of its point guard recruiting on
Glasgow (‘ounty junior Brandon Stockton.

Then. Tubby Smith offered the senior a

scholarship after his performance in the Sev-
enth Region tournament.

("hiles accepted. saying he had always
dreamed of playing at UK.

Now. he must play behind senior .l.P.
Blevins and sophomore (,‘liff Hawkins. The
point guard depth is incredible. especially
considering Stockton already committed.

Chiseled: Strong, physical Hayes has reputation as rebounder

(‘huck Hayes might surprise a lot of fans.

Like Erik Daniels and Gerald Fitch last
year. Hayes was not a high school All-Ameri-
can. He was a top loo recruit and a [K
sleeper

Hayes has a reputation of being a physi-
cal rebounding forward with a respectable
inside game.

He should fit that role off the bench for
the Cats nicely. but he possesses good
athletecism.

His jump shot will not be good enough
for him to play the perimeter. but Hayes
could develop into a small forward with
work on his shooting. Until then. he will
serve as adequate backup at power forward.
