"RESOLVED: That the Federal Government Should Adopt a Permanent Policy of Price
and'Uage Controls?’

The Debating Team of Georgetown College, winner of the South Atlantic Tourney of
two years ago, will discuss this thought—provoking issue with Sisterhood this
month, The subject is vital ~ the team is one of the best in the Southeast.

by Rabbi
Maurice
Davis

What a strange religion we have:
Each man who looks at it derives a vastly
different picture. There are those who
see in Judaism a maze of rituals and cus—
toms which they feel dutyAbound to memo-
rize and perform. Others view our reli~
gion as a treasure chest of knowledge
through which they feel compelled to rump
mage.

All of us struggle with partial-truths.

We talk and argue about theories, concern—
ing the attributes of God, the Creation of
the universe, and the cause of rain. We,
learnedly dispute each other's beliefs,
and fail to see that all of our words are
peripheral to the essence of Judaism,
which has to do with man's relationship
to man.

But once in a while a statement is
made that cuts to the core of the matter.-
Rab Hisda believed that knowledge was im-

portant, that rituals were'important, only

if they were accompanied by kindness and
humility. Therefore, he once remarked,
"Concerning the man who is arrogant, the
Holy One, blest be He, says;'He and I
caanot dwell together in this World'."
It seems to me thattfis summarizes
one of the essentials of our religion.

The other day, quite suddenly, some

populJtion changed from two ed a1ts and

The children were deeply conscious
of each other's presence, and the manner
in which they reacted to this intelli~
gence never failed to sustain our interé
est. As we Watched then play, howe"er,
something occurred to me that changed
the whole scene from one of entertain-
ment to one of instruction.

There Were tines when one of them
would wresta .toy out of a friend's hand
in order to play with it himself. "here
were other times when he would take his
own toy and offer it to his friendc In
the first case he acquired a toy, and
in the latter case he lost one,

Now,the interesting thing was this
Invariably he appeared happier when he
had given than when he had taken away,
After the ‘selfish' gesture , he would
play with the toy listlessly but after
the 'generous s? gesture, he appeared to
glow with happiness,

I remembered the Words of a poet
who said, "There are two 1finds of "ratin
tude; tile sudden kind we feel for what
we take, and the larger kind we feel
for what We give."

Once again, I had learned a truth
from little children. ~

I just looked at my watcho It's
ten o‘clock in the evening0

What in the world an I doing here
at 10 o'clock at night? Thatcs easyo
I'm trying to knock out this column for
tomorrow morning's deadline;

Spent all afternoon in Paris, try-
ing to meet all the members ( and non—
members, too), Dashed home for a has—
ty bite before the IFT' kids came over
for a meeting, They left a Ea;f hour
ago, so here I an, back at Teiple; he
place is cold, and dark, and formalzbo
.oua a temple should have people in itp

Why write a column, anyway? No-
body told me to. Nobody asked me too
For all I know, nobody even roads the
darn thing.

Why write a column? I suppose
it‘s because I don't want the bulletin
to become as cold and formal as, the
building is right naw. ibst bulle—
tins are deadly things 06.: a bunch of
announcements, all wrapped up, Direct
from the nineograph machine right to'
the wastebasketo

I want our bulletin to be warm,
and human. Come to think of it,
that‘s what I want our congregation
to be, tool

Well, it's easy to do something
about a bulletinoooooao just a little
extra Work and effort, but it's worth
it.

It should be just as easy with the
congregation, Think we all had bet—
ter start working on thatgoooeno right
away.

Can‘t put an ad in the paper, "Con-
gregation Adath Israel - Family Style"n

Can‘t put it in the paper, but I
bet we can put it into action; Let‘s
try.

Do you remember that poem by Hous-
man that begins: "When I would muse in
childhoodcuo"? I was reading it again
the other day, and my mind began to wan-
der over childhoodo Every child is a
dreamer, capable of staring long minutes
into space or walking long hours in the
parka His hands are in his pobkets, His
feet are scuffing along the path5 And
his eyes are a million miles away, And
he dreamsoooeoucoouo.

He is dreaming of days to come and
of the glory he will surely attaino His
world is filled with friends, and enemies,
and heroes and villainso The lines are
drawn up, and he, naturally, is on the
side of the angels. And so he dreamsaOn.

Whe I was a youngster, my favorite
dream was how I would someday brave the
terror of enemies for an idealc Davis,
the little knight in shining armor, Would
stand up in the presence of the villains
and proclaim his allegiance to those
which his family and his rabbi epitomized»
I Wondered if I WOuld be strong enough
to withstand the hatred of these villainSQ
And so I dreamedoeuooc00c-n

I grew up and learned that my fears
were unfoundedo It is easy to brave the
terror of enemies for an idealo But,
armething else is difficult; difficult
for me, and perhaps for otherso It is
to bear the laughing scorn of friends
for an ideals The ideals are the some,
the cast of characters is different. I
guess I still need to dreamo....a=....

Post—marten on the Annual Meetinggun

or...c random thoughts by Rabbi Gimmicks .

From beginning to end it was a tho—
roughly delightful evening, The food
was excellent.... at times like that I
wish I had a better appetitea

The reports were gooda,3.surprisingly
good. They were informative and pleas—
ant to listen to... of course, Madmnan
Strauss was the hit of the eveniu'.‘= I
wish that the men of the congregation
would get behind the Brotherhood a lit-
tle more,

There was a good turnout, too. In
spite of the rainy'weather, there were
those who drove many miles to attendpaa
it would be wonderful if more of the out-
of—towners could have attended .:.c it
is their temple, tOOo It!s no fun to
drive fifteen or thirty miles, but I
think it is Worth it.... maybe I‘m pre-
judiced°

Marion and I were thrilled with the
reception, the poem and the kind words
that were spoken.

I never realized how beautiful the
vestry could be. Helen and 12 are true
geniuses when it comes to decorationso

But, you know, there were other rea—
sons why it was beautiful here last Suné
day night. a o I

It was beautiful because a group of
people, dedicated to their religion and
their congregation met together...“ they
met jointly to plan for and to discuss .
their future.... they met to assume their
responsibility and to understand it....

There was learning and growth. There
was enthusiasm and feIIOWShip and friend-
shipa... therefore, there was beauty...

I think I am going to like it here.

POSTMORTEM ON BPQTHERHGOD

By the grace of God we have passed
safely through another brotherhood'fieekc
For seven days there was a frenzy of ac—
tivity, and an ecstasy of fumbling while
we paid official homage to an official
holidayo

We met in large unwieldy groups to
lay flowers on the grave of brotherhood
as if it were the Unknown Soldier on.Ar—
mistice Day: We paid solemn tribute to
brotherhood, and read lengthy eulogies,
as if it Were over something that has
passed awayy And when it was over, We
looked at'our watches and saidto oursel-
ves, ”Now, where were wehocs?"

Now I grant that it is an interest—
ing game that we play, but I have an idea
that we could vastly improve upon it.
First of all, we abolish Brotherhood Keek
and bring back brotherhoodc Secondly,
since we must have our circuses along
with our bread, we establish Hatred‘fieek.
Now that would be something to contem;
plate9LOano

He!d have a huge meeting, and We
would get ourselves some outstanding
authority on the subject; perhaps Sen.
McCarthy, or Pegler, or Gerald L. K.
Smitho ‘We would sit politely through
the speech and quietly yawn behind our
napkins....o....

And when it was finished we would
walk out into the clean fresh air, look
at our watches, and say to ourselves,
"Now, where were we......?"

Everything would be the opposite
of today° Brotherhood would be a vi-
brant part of our lives, and hatred on-
ly an official occasion. ‘aWe would
place flowers on the grave of hatred
and piously murmur, "May it rest in
peace;"

Now, whom could we get to be
Chairmanaa o o o u n o?

Lexington has had the bug! For
the past month all sorts of viruses have
been roaming up and down our whole "Kenh
tucky home. I did not think much about '
it until I found myself last week holding
a thermometer to the light, and reading the
verdict —-- 103 degrees.

My doctor tells me that this epi
demic occurs wherever there has been a
mild winter. Apparently, if the winter
had been more severe, we would have been
more careful in our dress5 and the bug
would have been left out in the COlda

We were so anxious to have done
with winter that at the first sign of
warmth we threw off our overcoats and
dashed out to hear the music of spring.
The song in our hearts became quickly a
cold in the nose, and the malady lingers
on. It would have been wiser to wear
a muffler than to make believe spring
is here.

We make the same mistake in all
our endeavors. We are SO anxious that
progress be swift that we are always ready
