  V' ` but most of the buildings were
  V     crumbling with age and neglect; a
V   “ —, `   V small library housed an inadequate V

;   men‘s dormitories worthy of the
V V_ · name. there were not enough class
  °` · V . rooms or laboratories, the curric-

ball field with no stadium.
The football field then was the present practice Held, on two sides of which were wooden bleachers apt
to fall at any minute. When not in use by the football squad. the gridiron was converted into a baseball dia-
mond   hard as brick. But Frank LeRond McVey went to work. It was a bitter struggle. what with wrang-
` ling funds from the State Legislature for necessary improvements and such, but he obtained results.
New buildings have sp1·ung up all over the campus; new shops, new laboratories, new museums. plenty of
class room space, one of the finest university librai·ies in the South, a student body that has grown by leaps
and bounds. a beautiful campus—and a modern, adequate concrete stadium flanking an excellent football
held. to say nothing of a basketball building capable of housing nearly 5.000 spectators.
And the stalwart young man who came here from the bleak tundras of North Dakota still is at the helm.
