of his g1aiidfather in 1802, and in 1814 11:15
created Viscount Gordon, in rich 1t of which he
sat in the House of Lords. On account of his
former classic reseatches into :1ntiqna1ian re-

tician and statesman, however, that he 1s best

Subsequently he 11 as recognised as a staunch
adherent 0f tl1e"'101y party, and azcepted,
under the first administration of the duke of
\Vellington, the office of secretary for fozeiqn

establishing theindependenCe ofGr eece. Under
the 1.11in administ' ation of Sir Robert Peel
(1834~5) he 1\ 11s colonial secretaiy, and on the
restomtion to po11e1 of that statesman in 1811,
he once more became [01 1.1;111 secretary, whicli
office he held until the ministry fell, in 18.16.
011 the death of Sir Robert, the earl of Aber-
deen was considered to be the Virtual repre-
sentative of what was known as the Peel party,
and on the fall of the Derby ministry in 1852,
he was empowered to form a new administra-
tion. This he effected, and he steadily endea-
voured to prevent the country from enteringr
upon the conflict with Russia. All his efforts,
however, were unavailing, and war vas 11e~
clared against the northern autocrat. Under
the remainder ofhis administration, the public
believed that the war was not conducted with
that degree of vigour necessary to insure fa-
vourable results. Failing to receive sufﬁcient
suppmt to enable him to carry out his mea-
sures the e1rl resigned in 1855. 111: after-
