Garmina Sacra
Sacreb Songs for the Sunbag School

This Sunday School Hymnal has been compiled for the specific purpose
of providing a high-grade collection of GOSPEL SONGS and STANDARD
HYMNS that will meet the needs of the Modern Sunday School. Sifnday
School specialists and prominent teachers of music have been consulted with
reference to the scope of the material, and the general character of the
selections to be used. While prepared especially for the Sunday School, it
can be used in all religious services to good advantage.

Special care has been given to the music. ‘ Tunes that tend toward the
arousing of evil emotions have been excluded. The tunes selected are such
as will lend themselves readily to the awakening of the best and purest
emotions, and thereby teach reverence and devotion. This has been the one
severe test to which all the tunes have been subjected; only such tunes can
be used in the building of real character.

The orchestration was prepared by Prof. Geo. W. Clarke, Chicago, Ill.
It is more than a mere transposition of the vocal parts, and possesses those
fine qualities that enrich instrumental music and hold the interest of the
efiicient musician. The arrangements will not be worn thread-bare after
having been rendered a few times. Yet there is a simplicity about them that
will make them available for use by the amateur.

Every Sunday School should have a Chorus Choir. This choir is more
essential than an orchestra, and is more easily obtained. Of course, have both
if possible. A choir in the school is as important as one in the church, and
the former should be a feeder for the latter. If possible one competent leader
should have charge of all the music of both church and school; wise leader-
ship means much here. This Sunday School choir can be easily procured
without additional organization by using one or more organized classes, and
these should be seated upon the platform, while the orchestra should be
located immediately in front upon the main floor, and should support the
choir but not over-balance it! A large number of two-page selections have
been included in this Hymnal for the use of this choir; additional material,
more elaborate, may be obtained in “Hackleman’s Mixed Quartettes and
Choruses.” '

This Hymnal can be placed in the hands of the pupils of all departments
of the School, with the calm assurance that it will render a distinct service as
an aid in singing praise to the Eternal Father and God of All. Believing that
this hymnal will prove a blessing to all who may use it in the development
and maintenance of spiritual life, we gladly send it forth, trusting that it may
receive the welcome it so richly deserves.

w. E. M. HACKLEMAN, and
EDWIN O. EXCELL. Editors.
