lain happy to present this bulletin which gives pertinent-
information concerning the program of secondary education in Ken—
tneky. In it will be found a elassified list of all the high schools
existing in the state for the school year 1963—64, A companion
bulletin is being issued later which gives similar information for

the elementary schools.

In presenting this bulletin I am mindful of the fact of the great
in1D1‘0Venlent that is going on in the area of secondary education
throughout. the state. I want to eonnnend all the peI‘Sonnel on the

KENTUCKY HIGH SCHOOL — 1963-64

Kentucky public and private high schools are classified and
accredited by the State Board of Education. This requirement is
set forth in the law which requires that each school district in the
state provide an approved twelveg'rade sehool service and that rules
and regulations be adopted governing the quality of this service.
The law also provides that the “Superintendent of Public Instruction
shall annually prepare or cause to be prepared and submit for ap-
proval and publication by the State, Board of Education a list
ofallpiiblic and private high sehools or other secondary schools in
the state, showing their classifications.” Accredited classifications
“when each year by official action of the Kentucky State Board
Of Education on recommendations of the staff in the Division of
Instructional Services, Section on lnstruction, State Department of
Educition. The, Commission on Secondary Schools of the Kentucky
ASSOCIHtion of Colleges, Secondary, and Elementary Schools has
worked 111 close cooperation with the staff of the Division of Instruc-

becoming: larger making it praetieable to offer a broader Program
of Studies for the youth of the State.

Table II shows the number of complete high schools and the
Change in number for a thirteen—year period from 1950-51‘101963-64.
In this period of time, the number of high schools have decreased
from 569 to 425, or 144 fewer schools than existed 13 years ago.

The number of pupils enrolled in the high schools continues to
increase. This year there has been an increase of over 12,000 pupils
enrolled in grades 7-12 from 2733.962 in 1962-453 to 245,905 in 1963-54.
The breakdown between the enrollment ol' the high schools operated
by the county school districts and the independent school districts is
represented by over tho-thirds of them being enrolled in the county
school districts against less than one—third in the independent school
districts.

Table \'l which follows gives the enrollment in all types of
high schools in the state, grades 7-12 classified according to the type
of control under which the school operates.
