KENTUCKY HIGH SCHOOLS —— 1974-1975

Kentucky public and private high schools are classified and
accredited by the State Board of Education. This requirement is
set forth in the law which requires that each school district in the
state provide an accredited twelve-grade program and that rules
and regulations be adopted governing the quality of this program.
The law also provides that the “Superintendent of Public Instruc—
tion shall annually prepare or cause to be prepared and submit
for approval and publication by the State Board of Education a
list of all public and private high schools or other secondary
schools in the state, showing their classifications.” Accredited
classifications are given each year by official action of the Ken—
tucky State Board of Education on recommendations of the staff
in the Division of Supervision — Accreditation - Organization State
Department of Education. The Committee on Secondary schools
has worked in close cooperation with the Instructional staff in an
advisory capacity on arriving at the recommended ratings.

This year there are 398 high schools. Table I which follows
Shows the number of schools classified according to the type of or-
ganization and the controlling authority under which they operate.

Of the 398 schools operating, 321 are high schools offering a
Program of Studies through the twelfth grade, and are considered
complete high schools. The complete high schools show a decline
from year to year which means that the high schools are becoming
larger making it practicable to offer a broader Program of Studies
for the youth of the State.

Table II shows the number of complete high schools and the
change in number for a fifteen-year period from 1960-61 to 1974-75.
In this period of time, the number of high schools have decreased
from 462 to 321 or 141 fewer than existed 15 years ago.

The common type of high school organization conforms to
either a six—year high school, grades 7—12; or a four-year high
school grades 9-12. This year there are 79 six-year high schools
and 203 four-year high schools. Last year there were 86 six-year
high schools and 210 four—year high schools. By far the greatest
number of these schools are organized as grades 9-12.

In Table III, there is an accumulation of information concern'
ing the number of high schools representing the growth since
1965-66 to 1974-75. It is interesting to notice that since the schoO1
year of 1965-66 when there were 448 schools that there are noW

evidence that the high schools of the Commonwealth of Kentucky
are becoming larger and therefore offering the potentials of pro-
