Miss Barrows has just phoned to say that the President
thinks that the meeting this afternoon should be for
men only, which would exclude Miss Newman. Mrs.

Truman is giving a tea at 4:00 p. m. , and the President

suggests that Miss Newman attend that. The way it

stands now, Miss Newman will be unable to accompany
the group unless you wish to pursue the matter with

the Pre sident direct.

The attached memo was sent to the Chief Justice on the Bench today.

He took it up with the members of the Court in Conference after the ad—

journment of Court, and it was agreed that the Chief Justice should inform

Miss Newman of the President‘s wishes in regard to the matter. The Chief
Justice saw Miss Newman at 1:45 p. m. , explained the situation to her, and
she informed the Chief Justice she would like to attend Mrs. Truman's tea

in lieu of accompanying the Court to the White House. An invitation for her
