The faculty met in the president's room in the gymnasium
building at 3:30 p. m., those present being President Barker,
President~Emeritu.. Patterson, Vi 3e Presiclent White, Miss
Hamilton, and Messrs. Allen, AncH arson, Brown, Curtis, Frankel,
Carmen, Good, Healy, Jones, Kelly, Lafferty, llackenz ie,

Miller, %.\.Patt,r on, Pence, Peter, ryor, Hora, Snow, Terrell,
Turner, Tuttle and Wilson.

After the minutes of the previous me3ting had been read
and adopted, the various standing committees were invited to
make their reports. Committees 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 18
submitted no report

Professor Pence, chairman of the Committee on Courses
of Study, reported as follows, the report being adopted:

Dec.7,1910.

"The Committee met at 3:30 in Prof.Millcr's office.
Present: Professors Pence, Miller, Snow, Mathews, Home,
Jones

A motion was made by Professor Miller to authorize
ean Snow to enlarge hi.s seminar year from 1 to 3 hours
e1 week so as to include observation and practice work.
he motion was seconded by Prof.Rowe and carried with
unanimous co nse ent.

Professor White, chairman of the Committee on Calendar
and Bulletins, submitted an oral report wherein he requestc.
members of the faculty to have their calendar copy ready
by the 13th inst.

Professor Anders son, chairman of the Committee on Diplomas
and Degrees, reported as follows:

"The Committe 90 met in the offiq ” the Chairman.
Voted, to grant the request of Miss gfiiaabeth Hayden,
A.B. 1910, to pursue Mathematics as her major, and
Physics and German as her minors. On the recommendation
of Dean Miller, the Committee voted to re 00 nize this
group of studies for the M.fi. (not the M.A. degree; and
further to waive objections to the latzness of the
application, which should have been filed before the
October meeting of the faculty.

Upon the recommendation of the Dean of Civil
Engineering, the Committee granted the requests of the
following named persons to study for the C.F. degree
the subjects indicated; as in the preceding case, also,
waiving objections to the late see of the applications:

I.H.Downing (B.C.F. 1908), in residence. Major
study Bridge Design; minor, Mathematics.

Thesi 1s: Design of Various Types of Highway Bridges.

D.W.Xarp (B.C.E.1909), in residence. Major study,
Sanitary Engineering; minor subjects, Chemistry,
Bacteriology and Mathematics.

Thesis: Design of Sewer System and Cenare Disposal System.

Emery Wells (B.C.E.1908), in absentia

and Terminals of the Chicago and Alton Pei lrey a.t

Upon recommendation of the lean of Mechanical
Engineering, and waiving objections as above, the
Committee acce:ted the sprlication of W.C.Kiesel,E.M.F.
1908, as conutuute for the degree Electrical Engineer:
Thesis: The Design of a Telephone Exchange of a Central
Battery Type.

Through the Secretary, Mr.J.C.Pe ldwin asked for
perm seion to study for the 11.A- in ulucation. Mr.
Baldwin hold:: a B.Ped. diploma from Valparaiso Univerm
sity. The Committee requested Dr.Rnow to ascertain the
amount of work which tins degree requires at Valparaiso,
and to aivise the candidate how much work would be
required to obtain our own A.B. in Education. When this
difference has been made up in resid enc , the Committee
will consic ler the application for poeteerattutc studies.

Dr.Snow sent in the following communication rem
leting to een‘idsteo holding the E.Ped. from the State
College of

'As this degree 's no longer awarded and th: work
it represents in of a distinctly lower grade than
what the University new demands for the A. B. and 8.8.
in Education, and in the College of Arts, 1 suggest
that your committee restrict any further candidates in
some suitable way, and at least demand from all who
present like credentials the equivalent of two years
rdf resident study, before they are permitted to present
themselves for examination.’

The Committee after some discussion decided to
refer this question to the faculty of the Tea cher‘s
College for further con.ideration, and espt;c Cielly to
ascertain exactly how much difference exists between
the old and the non degree, In former years the
B.Ped. degree was a university degree like that from
other colleges, and the members of the Comrit tee felt
that no harsh or unjust discrimination should be made
against candidates hol-ding sue dcgr 303. Further, 'f
the faculty of the Tea che :r's College finds that the
former B.led. is inferior to the present A.B. and 9.9.
in Education, the Committee on Degrees will be glad to
co operate in deciding to what extent the postm

Professor Miller, chairman of the Committee on
Athletics, submitted an oral report concerning the football
resolution introduced by Prof.Nathews at the faculty meeting
on December 8,1910. It was unanimously decided by the
Committee that it was inadvisable at this time to modify
or abolish the traditional custom of having a Thanksgiving
game of football.

Dr.Pryor, chairman of the Committee on Student Organ»
izations, submitted the following report:

The question of the advisability of granting the
Glee Club permission to take a trip sometime during
the spring was taken up by the Committee, and they
recommend that such permission be granted, provided
that the director of the Glee Club consider that the
club is able to give a creditable performance, and that
all students going on such a trip have all college
work up to the standard at the time the trip is taken.
The fact that E.L.Becker, manager of the club,
has been conditioned in most of his work for the term
ending December 1910, was brought to the attention
of the Committee, and it was recommended that Mr.Becker
be notified that, because of this, he was not eligible
to participa,e in the affairs of the Glee Club, and
that tho Glee Club also be notified of this action of
the Committee."

The committee‘s action in the case of E.L.Becker was
discussed by Vico~President White and other members of the
faculty. Finally the report was adopted as read.

Minutes of Faculty, February 3,191“.

Vioewpresident White called attention to Section 10
of the rules recently submitted by the Committee on Glas'
Standing and E aminations. He pointed out that, though he
W‘: in favor of the rules as a whole, they were adopted in
_. middle of a session. Inasmuch as nearly 50% of the
students had failed at the last examination in Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry and History, he urged that it was better
not to enforce these rules rigidly in the meantime. He
offered a motion that the execution of the rules as adopted
at the meeting in Uecember 8,1910, be placed in the care
of a committee of three, with power to suspend the rules
according to circumstances. The motion was seconded by
Judge Lafferty, and adopted by the Faculty. Thereupon a
special committee was appointed, considing of Professors
white, Anderson and Miller.

 

Section 13 of the report of the Committee upon Class
Standing and Examinations came up for consideration as
part of the unfinished business brought before the faculty
on December 9,1910. After discussion it was finally moved
by Prof.W.K.Petterson that Section 13 be sent back to the
Committee for further consideration. The motion was seconded
by Prof.Joned and carried ty-a majority.

L eut.Ke11y submitted a motion that conditions be not
allowed in Military Science, but that any student receiving
a grade of less than 75 be adjudged a Failure in that
subject. The motion was seconded by Vice~President White,
and carried unanimously.

Lieut.Kelly moved the adoption of the following:

Resolved, That the resolution (Section 5) passed
December 9,1910, relative to the date when certain rules
respecting Military Science and Physical Education shall
go into effect, be and is hereby revoked, and the
following substituted therefor:

Resolved, That these rules become effective at once,
with the exception of the provision allowing the presenta~
tion of exemption credits, which provision shall become
effective after August 1911.

This motion was seconded by Dr.8now, and carried
unanimously.

On motion the meeting adjourned.
