The faculty advisor was present. The minutes were
readand approved. No coundttee reports were given.

President Patrick put the suggestion to the
group that P. L. S. Key be purchased.

Secretary suggested that there be a dinner
meeting. Potion was made that the dinner meeting be
helm December 11 at 6;50 P. F'. 'n the S. U. B. at
31.50 per person. The motion was seconded by
Richard Pigman. lotion earlied.

Presifent Patrick suggested that initiation
ceremony be arranged oy Francis Paulo ner ( Chm.)

J. C. Powell and Robert istill. This was approv-
ed by the Faculty Adviser.

The meeting was turned over to Tro ram chair-
man J. C. Powell. Trogan Title: Summary of
Political Trend. Each of the speakers spoke on a
particular party of the recert election. The speak-
ers were: Kr. ?ritter , Yr. Iathews, Tr. Cockrel mid
Er. Press.

The meeting was adjourned until Decerberll
for dinner :eeting.

Dinner meeting held in the S. U. B. after
dinner the following speakers were reard: John
Douccumis, J. C. Powell, and “rancis Taulkner,
the subject being "Christmas Around the world".
Yr. Estill was then heard. re eve a reliqious
talk or the suhject of the holiday at hand. Fr.
Patrick was then given the flocr in the capacity
of president. After a short talk by the Faculty
Adviser, Dr. Sterrett, the meeting was adjourned
until after the holiday.

 

 The Patterson Literary Society met Tueaday
night January 11,1949 at the S. U. B. with nine
members present.

Edward Brooking , Speaker for the evening,
was unable to attend due to a very bad cold.

Robert McGowan, Recox mended by the membership
conmuttee for membership, appeared. The society
chose to hear him as tie complete progrm u. He
» gave a moving talk on Vice President Barkley.

Rules for membership were explained to the
candidate by President Patrick. The candidate
was then asked to leave the meeting.

Fation by John Douoonmis that Robert McGowan
be accepted for membership in to the Patterson
Literary. Seconded by Dr. Natthewa. Motion was
approved unanimously by those prnsent.

President Patrick requested that John Doucnmis
inform the (and'date, Robert} IC"ovan tlat He was
selected and accepted by letter after on week
of time had elapsed.

The society advisrr, Dr. Sterret,made an
announcement in regards to the university
oratcrical orntest to be held on Narch 11th and
the celebraton of James Patterson's b rthday to
be held on March 26th, 1949. As many members
as possible were requested to participate in the
celebration oi the person’s birth day, whose name
the society bears.

Motion by hr. Estillthat the meeting adjourn.
Seconded by fir. Pigman. Approved.

 The Patterson Literary Society let Tuesday
Light, February 8, 1949 at the S. U. B. with
all the members present.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read
by Charles Patrick and approved.

The president Whlter Patrick announced that
Vfilliam Byron had resigned as secretary.

J. C. Powell, John Doucomis, and Robert
McCowan were nondmeted for secretary. Robert
McGowan was elected.

The society adviser, Fr. Sterret, explained
the procedure, time,, and place of the Patterson
Speech and the regular oratoriczl contest.

Kenneth Toomey, recomrended by the member-
ship conmittee for membership, appeared. The
society chose to hear him as the complece pro-
gram. Ve Have a splendid talk on racial preju-
dice.

Rules for membership were explained to the
candidate by President Patrick. The candidate
was then asked to leave the meeting.

Lotion by John Doucomis that Kenneth Toomey
be accepted for membership in to the Patterson
Literary. Seconded by Kr. Latthews. Lotion was
approved unanirously by those present.

he was selected and accepted by letter after
a week of time had elapsed.

Dr. Sterret appointed James Fritter, Robert
Estill, and Charles Dongherty on the program

 The Patterson Literary met Tuesday night,
February 22, 1949 at the Guignol Lounge with
ten members present.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read
and approved.

Dr. Sterrett made a report on what went on
at the program committee meeting. He explained
that the committee had concluded that the Patterson
Speech Contest was too big of a task for the
small committee. Every nember of the Society
would be a definite part of the program.

There wee a discussion about the small number
of participants in the contest. Mr. Fritter and
Fr. Estill would speak for sure. Fr. Doucoumis
and Tr. Toomey remarked that they thought they
would enter the contest.

March 5, was set as the date that each
contestant would present a sketch of his speech
to Dr. Sterret for approval.

Mr. Fritter made the motion the meeting be
adjourned. Seconded by Mr.-Pigman. Approved.

 The Patterson Literary Society met Tuesday
night Kpril 12, 1949 at the Guignol Lounge with
13 members present.

Linutes of the previous meeting were read
and approved. '

Dr. Sterrett presented the program. It
was a three act play entitled The Silver Cord
written by Sidney Foward. hr Daughterty read the
first act, Ur. Cockel read the second act, and
Mr. Dress read the third act. The comedy was
amusing and extremely well done.

The Nembership committee was urged by the
president Walter Patrick to enlist new prospects
for the society and there would he a rush meeting
on the second Tuesday in May.

There was a report made on all the expenses
of the Patterson Contest which was won by Hr.
Estill. Refreshments $10.50. Invitations $1.50.

Fr. Trooking made the motion for a $1 assessment.
The motion was seconded and passed.

Mr. J. C. Powell made tie renort for the
Advisory committee. The scholarship clause from the
constitution was read. The committee nominated
Yr. Walter Patri k and Er. Fahlboner for the
recipants of the Patterson Scholarship of over
$200.00. hr. Faulconer won by over a two—thirds /
majority.

hr. Powell made the motion the meeting be

 The Patterson Literary Society met
at 7:00 PM, Tuesday November 8 in room
204 of the Student Union Building.

The minutes of the previous meeting were
read by the Secretary and approved. The
roll was called.

After a few introductory comments by
the Bresident, Dr. Sterrett presented the
formal program which consisted of the two
Winning speeches from last year's national
oratorical contest. Harvey Selwitz read
"Return From Wasteland". Don Sherlock
presented the winning speech for the
women's division, "My Brother and I".

Feur candidates for membership then
presented their speeches of application:

H.R. Butner - - "A Biographical Sketch"
Jim Inman - — - "“5000 Salary Limit"
Jim Northcutt - "Children's Summer Camp"
A.P. Steely - - ”Bducational Dress-up"

Each candidate was voted on separately
and accepted by majority of the voting
membership.

It was decided that we would adopt a
silver key as our symbol for the organization.
Assessment for the Kentuckian picture
is $1.70 per person, payable to the

treasurer, Charles Wathews.

The meeting was adjdurned.

 The Patterson Literary Society met
at 7:00 PM, Tuesday December 6 in room
204 of the Student Union Building.

The minutes of the previous meeting
were read by the Secretary and apprdved.

The President then turned the meeting
over to the speakers for the evening, Earl
Conn and James Frittier. fir. Conn gave a
sincere and interesting review of Henry
Hornsby's ”Lonesome Valley" and Mr. Frittier
followed with a humorous presentation of
Robert L. Taylor's biography of "W.C. Fields".

Tr. Robert Wilson then presented his
speech of application,"Lest We Forget".
After several members spoke in his behalf
his acceptance into membership was discussed
and verified by majority vote.

It was determined that since H.R.

Butner is only a part-time student he can
be accepted into our meetings only as a
guest. It was pointed out that Jim
Northcutt can be eligible for membership
only after his standing has improved.

After some discussion on membership
procedures, ”r. Powell made this inclusive
motion: that the membership be filled to
20; that applications for membership be
made only in January and June: that the
applicants be interviewed; that the applications
be considered by the Society and invitations
extended; that the men speak atithe next
meeting and be voted on. The motion was
seconded and unanimously accepted.

Mr. McGowan made the motion that a
member be dropped after two consecutive
absences. The motion was seconded by
Mr. Frittier and passed.

hr. Mathews reported $15.90 in the
treasury and an outstanding debt of #25
for the Kentuckian picture.

After a plea by Hr. Frittier for business
brevity in the meetings the meeting was
adjourned.

attendinm summer school in Quebec.

The President described our Dam in the
forthcoming edition of the Kentuckian.

Theater.

. Five men then presented their speeches

Stanley Portmann - "Baron Rupp"
Bosworth Todd - "Kentucky's $keleton"

The five hen were discussed, voted on

treasury with en outsteiding debt of $25.

After discussing the ordering of keys
for the society it was determined thet tine
was of the utmost inportance if the keys
are to be secured this semester. Tr. Steeley
moved that the society delegete the nower
to Bob ”cCowen to order silver keys if they
cost under i6.00. ’

The Secretary Wis advised to warn tho:e
who are in danger of losine their member-
shin because of absences.

Hal Griffen cresented his speech of
application to nembershio in the Society,
sneakinm on the subject, ”“lato Speaks to
the Present".

Mr. Frittier then save an interesting
and humorous interpretation of the life
of James K. Patterson and the early years
of the Patterson Literary Society.

The President then congratulated the
narticipants in the recent oratorical
contest, both of Whom are members of this
Socirty. Mr. Trittier returned the
congratulations to the President for his
chairmanship in the oratorical contest;

”r. WcCoran reported that the sterling
silver keys would be ready by the end of
Aoril —- one buck down and “4.10 when
the member nick; up his key.

James Frittier, Boswortr r"odd, and
YT‘ran‘ac Kyers were commissioned to set up
plans for the annual dinner of the Society.

Dr. Sterrett was given a roaring round
of anoreciation for his Generous suonort
of the Society and his untiring efforts to
make sneakers of the oarticinants in the
oratorical contest.

Hal Griffin was discussed for acceptance
into membership, voted on an’ aonroved.

The meeting was adjourned.

 The Patterson Literary Society met
Tuesday April 18, 1950 at 7:00 PM in room 204
of the Student Union Building.

The minutes of the previous meeting
were read and amended to include the names
of the contestants in the local oratorical
contest. The contestants were Harvey Selwitz
and Bob Srith, the latter being the winner.

The Treasurer reported a balance of $4.35.

The Dinner Committee gave their report.
Boz Todd reported on dinner possibilities at
the Student Union; Frank Wyers, the Lafayette
Hotel; and James Vrittier, Capps Coach House.
Stanley Portmann made the motion that the
dinner he held at the Lafayette Hotel. The
mation was seconded and passed. The dinner is
to be held Tuesday, hay 23rd.

Mr. Trittier enlightened us on the George
W. Crum endowment which now amounts to
£1400. He had not yet learned how that sum
may be spent.

The next meeting is to he mu=sday "ay 9th.

“embers Griffin, Osborn, Inman and
Vathews were appointed by the President to
determine the cuests who will be invited to our
annual dinner.

After having exolained his absinces, hr.
Diqman was reinstated both to members in
and to his office of Vice—president.

Don Sherlock, acting as chairman of the
advisory committee explained the procedure
for selecting the recipient of the Patterson
Society Scholarship. He also listed the
necessary Qualifications of the recipient.
The advisory committee presented its three
nominations for the honor —- Wr. WcCowan,

Hr. Selwitz, and Tr. Smith. Mr. Smith was
the very fortunate winner of that $200
scholarship.

Our newly reinstated Vice—president gave
us his very entertaining approach to folk
music. He was his own accompanist on the
guitar —- truly a talented Veep.

1950 AT 7:00 PM IN ROOM 204 OF THE STUDENT UNION
BUILDING.

THE MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING WERE READ AND
CORRECTED AS FOLLows: THE DINNER GUEST COMMITTEE IS
MADE UP OF MEMBERS GRIFFIN, OSBORN , AND DR. STERRETT.

DR. STERRETT READ LETTERS FROM VARIOUS MEMBERS OF
THE UK ADMINISTRATION CONCERNING THE CRUM ENDOWMENT.
IT WAS URGED THAT MR. CRUM'S GIFT BE FURTHER INVESTIGATED
AND ACTED UPON NEXT FALL.

THE TREASURER REPORTED A $10.50 BALANCE.

THE SOCIETY KEYS ARE DUE IN AT SHANKLIN'S FLOWER
SHOP ON MAY I2. $35.30 HAS BEEN COLLECTED ON THE KEYS
LEAVING $68.70 TO BE PAID ON THE TWENTY KEYS ORDERED.

MR. OSBORN GAVE THE REPORT OF THE GUEST COMMITTEE.
HE GAVE THE LIST OF SUGGESTED GUESTS AND FURTHER
SUGGESTED THAT THE ASSESSMENT FOR GUESTS BE LIMITED TO
60¢ PER MEMBER.

MR. FRITTIER REPORTED THAT THE LAFAYETTE RED ROOM
WAS RESERVED FOR 6:30 PM MAY 23. AFTER MUCH ARGUMENT
PRO AND CON IT wAS DECIDED THAT wE WERE ILL PREPARED
FINANCIALLY AND OTHERWISE To HAVE A DINNER AT THIS
TIME. THE DINNER WAS VOTED DOWN.

DR. STERRETT ASKED THAT THE PARTING SENIORS GIVE
A WORD. MEMBERS SMITH, MATHEWS, FRITTIER, SHERLOCK, AND
CONN GAVE THEIR PARTING WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO A
VERY ATTENTIVE GROUP.

FURTHER CLOSING REMARKS WERE MADE BY MR. MCCOWAN
AND DR. STERRETT. THE LATTER EXPRESSED A DESIRE FOR
MORE FREQUENT MEETINGS IN COMING YEARS.

THE MEETING WAS ADJOURNED.

Patterson Literary Society, speech
organization. Other officers are Hal
Griffin, vice president; Bosworth
Todd, secretary; and Doug Osborne,
treasurer.

New members of the society are
Joe Mainous, Paul Holleman, and
Franklin Morris.

The purpose of the society is to
promote speech activity on the cam—
pus. A scholarship is awarded each
year to a member of the society
named outstanding in forensic activ-
ity.

The program for the December
meeting will be a discussion on the“
Student Government Association
presented by Bob McGowan, Joe
Mainous, and Paul Holleman.

 . The Patterson Literary Society met
Tuesday, October 26 at 7:00P.M. in Room
207 of the Student Union Building.

, The minutes of the previous meeting
read and approved.

Two applicants for membership in the
Patterson Literary Society bade their app—
lication speeches before the group. They
were Joe Mainous, who made a Very interesting
talk on "Legalized Gambling," and Paul Holle-
man, who-made a thought—provoking talk on
"Comparitave Status of Football Pla‘ers of 1910
and 1950."

Both men were accepted as members of
Patterson Literary Society by a unanimous vote
of the membership. , -

The motion was made, seconded, and accepted_
that henceforth initiation fee for the Patterson
Literary Society will bet5.00, which includes
the Patterson Literary Society Key.

Douglas Osborn and Hal Griffin were
Chosen to serve on the interview committee.

Dr. J.Reid Sterrett, our Faculty advisor,
offered the names of some men for consideration
as possible members of the Society. He also
suggested that programs be considered and
a discussion held next meeting to discuss
better program planning.

Discussion concerning a Kentuckian page
for the Patterson Literary Society was post~
poned until the following meeting.

Election of officers for the Society is to
take place Tuesday, NovemberV, 1950. .

A motion was made and accepted that the
meetings of the Patterson Literary Society
will henceforth be on the first Tuesday of
each month.

The meeting was adjourned.

He also asked that the ciety actively

20, 1951.

A discussion was held about payment
of the bill from the Kentuckian. President
Portman urged that everyone who could do so,
particip_ , in the Men's Oratorical Contest
on March 1 He also asked that the society
actively participate in the sponsorship
pf this contest.

He opened a discussion about having
a drive for new members for the Sa31ety.

It was suggested that potential candidates
be taken partly from the speech classes of
the past semester. Each candidate was
assigned to a member of the Society for
personal rushing.

Dr. Sterrett suggested that we have
the potential candidates appear at Dr.
Sterrett's oftice on Friday, March 2nd
from 2-4 P.M. Anyone désiringt to apoly
for membershipfito appear at that time for
interview before the membership committee.

The program,‘which Consisted of a
round-table discussion, was held. Jack
Rice moderated a panel on "The College
Basketball Fixing Scandal in Front Page
News."

The meeting was then adjourned until
March 27.
