The University Senate met in the Assembly EOOm of Lafferty Hall Monday,
October 21, 1940. President Coooer nresided.

The minutes of August 21 were read and annroved.

President Cooner introduced to the Senate new members by annointment and
by nromotion, and also members of the Senate who had returned from leave
of absence.

President Cooner informed the Senate that there were three vacancies on

the University Council. Professors Haun and Todd had comnleted the terms
for which they were elected, and with Professor Eblen on leave of absence,
there was created a third vacancy for one year. It was the decision of the
Senate to elect three members to the Council, with the understanding that
the one of the three receiving the lowest number of votes would fill the
vacancy left by Professor Eblen for one year. The other two were to be
elected for two year terms in accordance with University regulations. As

a reaflt of the election, Professors J. W. Martin and C. C. Ross were elected
to the Council for two year terms, and Professor A. Vandenbosch was elected
for the unexnired portion of Professor Eblen‘s term.

The following resolution on the life and work of Maury J. Crutcher was read
to the Senate by Professor Ezra L; Gillie:

Maury Julian Crutcher

"The Senate of the University of Kentucky on this its first regular
meeting succeeding the untimely death of Mamy Crutcher desires to nlace on
permanent record a brief statement regarding his early life, his work at
the University, and in a few words, free from eulogy, its annreciation of
him as a man.

Maury Julian Crutcher was born in Mt. Eden, Shelby county, June 3,

1892. He was graduated from du Pont Manual Training High School in Febru-
ary, 1911, and from the University of Kentucky with the degree of Bachelor
of MechaniCal Engineering in 1917. In both high school and college he was

active in student affairs, esnecially in athletics, being cantain of the
football team in his senior year. He enlisted in the field artillery at
Camp Taylor January 1, 1918, was made second lieutenant in June of that
year, and received his discharge at Camp Lewis, Washington, March 13, 1919.
Before his employment by the University he had acouired engineering exner-
ience with a number of nationally known engineering cornorations. In one
of these nositions he aided in the construction of the stadium on Stoll
field.

In 1925 he assumed the nosition as Sunerintendent of Buildings and
Grounds. He found it a small denartment, noorly equipned, with little organ—
ization. He was called unon to render in a limited time many Varied and com~
plex services to every denartment of the University, which at best was a dif—
ficult task; but he brought to the discharge of his duties a zeal, a fidelity
and a devotion that snared no effort for its advancement. He had many diffi-
