 FOREWORD

A review of the accreditation of elementary schools of the state
for the school year 1967-68 indicates major progress is being made
ill many areas of elementary education.

Progress in the various areas reflects the concern that personnel
of elementary schools have for meeting the individual needs of
children. The importance of these concerns is shown by improve-
ment in the following areas:

l/Expansion of curriculum offerings
l/lncrease of experimental programs
VGreater variety of teaching procedures and techniques

1/Tllc use of various teaching aids in quantity and quality
which reached an all time high during this past year

Elementary schools with eight or more teachers are classified
as Extended, Standard, Provisional, or Approved. Appropriate
standards and criteria. adopted by the State Board of Education are
Written into regulations for accrediting the elementary schools.

You will note that there are still relatively few schools classified
“3 Extended but you will also observe a gradual increase in the

number of Standard schools and a slight decrease in the number 0f
). n u r
llOVlSlonal schools.

ltrust this bulletin will be helpful to both elementary 5011001
personnel and others striving for a qualitative elementary SChOOI
for each child in Kentucky.

 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS FOR THE SCHOOL
YEAR 1967-68

There were 1038 elementary schools accredited by the State
Board of Education during the school year 1967-68. Of this number
694 were under the control of the county school districts and 205
were under the control of the independent districts. Nineteen (19)
were State, Federal, or Regional schools and 120 were private
schools. As will be seen, there was a variety of organizations ac-
cording to the grades included in the type of organization. By far,
the greatest number of organizations conform to a 1-8 type of organi-
zation or a 1-6 organization. Of these 481 were organzations offer—
ing a program from one through the eighth grade and 293 offered

a program from one to six grades making a total of 774 schools out
of 1,038.

Table I below shows the number of accredited elementary
schools classified according to the type of control for six years from
1962-68.

In all of the elementary schools, there was a total staff of ap-
proximately 22,600 teachers, supervisors, principals, and other
special instructional personnel serving during- the school year of
1967-68. Of this number 18,935 were serving in the schools of eight
or more teachers or schools accredited by the State Board of Edn-
cation.

Table .IV follmving shows the number of elementary schools
accredited for the school year of 1967-68 compared with the school
year of 1959-60, classified according to size.

lt will be seen from a study of Table l\" that the schools of 1‘5
teachers and below, have decreased in number from 616 to Shit
during the eight-year period while the schools of 17 teachers and
above have increased from 248 to 475.

The trend in the development of the elementary schools through-
out the state is towards the larger elementary school unit in order
to make it practical to offer an effective program of education.
