UK releases full text of allegations during semester break

By TOM SPALDING
Sports Editor

In mid-December, the University re-
leased the full text of the 18 NCAA allega-
tions of rules violations levied against the
basketball program.

Also, the NCAA extended UK‘s deadline
to respond to the allegations to Jan. 30.
The previous deadline was Dec. 12.

In October, UK released to the public a
summary of the supplemental official in-
quiry made by the NCAA. The University
omitted the names of individuals men»
tioned in the allegations to protect the indi-
viduals‘ privacy,

The Courier-Journal and Lexington Her-
ald-Leader filed a joint-petition against UK
to have the full text of the allegations re—
leased to the public

UK struggles
into 1989,
SEC games

By TU.“ SI’e\l.l)l.\'t;
Sports Editor

At this time last season, [K was enter-
ing the new year as the king of college bas-
kethall

The powerful Wildcats were the nation‘s
\‘o 1 ranked team. They led the Southeast—
ern (‘onference and had a perfect record.

Included in that 9-0 record were convinc-
ing victories over rivals Indiana Universi-
ty. the I'niversity of Louisville and a UKIT
trophy

But times have changed for UK, They‘re
not close to No. 1 Sutton is guiding a
young and inexperienced team through a
murderous schedule which has already
takenitstoll.

After a surprise win over the University
of Georgia at Rupp Arena last Wednesday,
I’K‘s record stood at 6‘? UK downed the
Bulldogs 76435. UK forward Reggie Hanson
lead the Cats with 20 points The Georgia
game gave the (Tats a good start into the
Southeastern Conference part of their
schedule and also added some momentum
heading into the Vanderbilt game on Satur-
day

"I guess we underestimated them." said
Georgia guard Pat Hamilton. “We took
them lightly l guess they wanted it
more than we did "

But before the Georgia contest. UK
coach Eddie Sutton was more than a little
worried about his t‘ats gomg into SEC
play

As of last week. UK's record was 57 —
the first time in 48 years that the Wildcats
have gone into Southeastern Conference
play With that many losses At his press
conference last week. Sutton said he is dis-
appointed with the team ’s record

“If you were to tell me at this point that
we‘d be 7-5. that's where we had ought to
be." Sutton said. “But we‘re 5-7 I think
our players realize that we‘re not far from
being a good ballclub. We‘ve just got to
correct some of the mistakes we’re mak-
mg.

One of those mistakes was seemingly
corrected Dec. 10 —- those upset losses to
no—name teams. Earlier that week. tiny
Northwestern State had come into Rupp
Arena and shocked UK 85-82. Determined
not to let that happen again. the Wildcats
smashed visiting Western Carolina. 78450.

UK. keyed by guard Richie Farmer's
three 3-pointers in a 19-6 first-half spurt,
rolled to victory

“We played better in the first half and
accomplished more than we did in the en-
tire game against Northwestern State."
Sutton said.

Kentucky entered the UKIT a week later
as the only team in the field with a losing
record. 34. In past years. the tourney was
always a chance for the Wildcats to mend
their wounds.

Instead. Bowling Green played spoiler,
upsetting the Cats 56-54 in the last minute.
In truth, the Wildcats didn't deserve to
win. They shot just 32.8 percent. But by the
same token neither did Bowling Green.
The visitors connected on only 40 percent
of their shots. committed 20 turnovers and
were outrebounded by nine.

UK took third with an impressive thump-
ing of Marshall University, 91-78. UK play-
er Chris Mills tossed in 17 points. UK‘s
IieRon Ellis led the Cats with 33.

That performance was the beginning of
what the players called their “new sea-
son." Seeking to end the sloppy play that
had caused two home-court losses, the
players held a “dobetter” talk in the lock—
er room after the Bowling Green game.

But the Indiana Hoosiers put an end to
that spirit. 1U slammed UK 75-52 at Rupp
Arena. A victory over Indiana would have
evened UK’s record at 5-5 in time for the
Christmas break.

“It‘s a little different this time than it‘s
ever been in my 30 years of coaching."
Sutton said after three homecourt losses
and a 46 record. “Going into Christmas

Fayette Circuit Judge George E. Barker
ordered the release of the full text of all
allegations on Dec. 12. Initially, 13 of the
allegations were released and UK ap»
pealed the release of the remaining four.
On Dec. 19. however, Barker denied the
appeal and the remaining text was re-
leased.

“The public has an overwhelming right
to know what these charges are,“ Barker
told the Lexington Herald-Leader. “Less
than full disclosures can pervert public in-
formation into a guessing game, drawing
in people who weren't involved. . , . we‘re
all taxpayers and I would want to know
what's been charged."

UK assistant basketball coach Dwane
Casey is named in seven of the first 13 al-
legations released.

Casey is charged with involvement in

payments made to recruits Sean Higgins
and Chris Mills. He is also mentioned in al-
legations concerning illegal transportation
of recruits and improper recruiting con—
tacts.

L'K player Eric Manuel is charged with
academic fraud in the allegations. Manuel
is accused of cheating on an American Col-
lege Test taken at Lafayette High School in
June of 1987

Manuel and another student taking the
test had identical answers on 211 of 219 re-
sponses. the NCAA said.

Also. of the eight different answers on
the twc answer sheets. seven on Manuel’s
test sheet were in a space next to the
space marked on the other student's list of
responses. the NCAA said.

Manuel failed two previous college en»
trance exams that he took in Georgia.

RAM“. “LIAM/Kernel Sta"

UK sophomore center Lefion Ellis dunks the ball against Marshall University over
the semester break. UK beat Marshall, 91 -78

I‘ve got a losing record. That's never hap
pened before."

Sutton said instead of being home for the
holidays, his squad practiced once
Christmas day and twice every other day.

The “Scrooge" method apparently
worked.

UK defeated Austin Peay on Dec. 27. 85-
77 in Louisville‘s Freedom Hall. Mills man—
aged a rare “triple double" in the game .
He had 19 points. 10 rebounds and 10 as-
sists.

It seemed the rest of the UK players had
just as good a time. Derrick Miller scored
16 points. Hanson had 19 and Ellis had 23
with seven rebounds. Sean Sutton contrib-
uted with seven assists.

The Austin Peay game gave UK momen»
tum heading into its game against the Uni»
versity of Louisville Cardinals. But al-
though Sutton was happy with the his
team’s play against the Governors. he said
the U of L contest would be a much stiffer
test.

“I was impressed with the way we
played,” Sutton said of the game against
Austin Peay. “We did play better but
again. it was one game and it was agaimt

a ballclub that is certainly not in the same
class with the t'niversity of Louisville."

UK held its own against the Cardinals at
the game's outset but the Wildcats' de-
pleated numbers couldn‘t hold up against
U of L's deep bench. The nth-ranked
Cards downed UK, 97-75 in the New Year‘s
Eve game

UK walk on Anthony Mathis was de-
clared academically ineligible for the
spring semester and red-shirt freshman
John Pelphrey suffered a stress fracture in
his left foot He’ll be out at least one more
week.

Louisville had not defeated Kentucky
since 1964. The Wildcats had won the last
three meetings, including an 85-51 shocker
in 1986 that Louisville fans hadn't forgot-
ten

“People didn‘t just want us to beat them.
They wanted us to blow them out," said
Louisville player Cornelius Holden.

The Cards had the upper hand in this
battle but the pesky. young Cats — led by
Miller, who had a phenomenal 34 points ——
never gave in Sutton hopes that kind of
energy and enthusiasm continues into the
SEC regular season.

Manuel, along with UK asSistant coach
Dwane Casey and UK player Sean Sutton.
is mentioned in another allegation for pro-
viding "false and misleading information‘
to three NCAA investigators last July
when they were interviewed about trans
portation to a college entrance exam at
Lafayette High School in June of ma?

Manuel and Sutton told investigators
that they drove to the test and later
back to the UniverSity‘s Wildcat Lodge
together. But the allegation says Lafayette
High School coach Donald W HUTTIHP pro
vided the transportation. “.‘hltfh was ar
