UK combing kno

L

out of VIP network

Walk-in sites will ease burden on phone AddflDrop

By Kathy w. Larkin
Staff Writer

If the mere mention of UK-ViP
Add/Drop finds you cowering at
the sight of a touch-tone telephone,
relax.

Until the kinks are worked out of
VIP, the UK registrar's office will
offer terminals to supplement the
system, said Lisa Collins, UK's as-
sistant registrar for registration.

More than 48,000 calls were
made to the system from Nov. 2 to
Dec. 31, Collins said.

However, there is no computer
program to divide the calls into cat-
egories.

Total calls represent advance reg-
istration, Add/Drop, schedule re-
view, registration cancellation and
grade option changes.

Collins said that since some calls
are less than a minute long, it’s un-
likely that a schedule transaction
was completed.

But because few complaints have
reached her office, she assumes that
students have terminated calls for
reasons other than a computer
glitch.

Thirty-three calls were received
on Christmas Day, and another 114
on New Year’s Eve, Collins said.
The system has been operating on
weekdays from 7 am. to 8 pm. and
on Saturdays from 8 am. to 5 pm.

Installation of the UK-VIP sys-
tem was completed in time for ad-
vance registration for the 1994
spring semester.

However, the unanticipated
length of each call received created

problems. and computer sites were
hastily set up to register students
who experienced difficulty with the
new system.

But December’s computer glitch-
es should not be repeated during
Add/Drop and late registration,
Tuesday through Jan. 19.

Collins said she is confident the
system new functions as expected,
and said she is encouraged by the
relatively few complaint calls she
has received since UK-VIP Add/
Drop began on Dec. 6.

“As far as we know,“ Collins
said, “Add/Drop has gone very
well."

But just in case Murphy‘s Law
should prevail, 15 computer tenni-
nal sites will be available as an al-
ternative to the phone system from
Tuesday through Jan. 19.

“To provide the level of student
services we want to provide," Col-
lins said, “you can Add/Drop by
phone or at a terminal link-up.“

To add or drop a course or cours-
es, a student must first have ad-
vance registered and paid a $50 fee.

For students currently enrolled
but who did not advance register, a
$40 late fee will be charged.

In addition, if a stop has been
placed on a student‘s record, the
student will be blocked from access-
ing UK-VIP.

University offices may place a stop
on a student's account if any money
is owed.

Many students may choose to
Add/Drop at a computer site to ob-
tain computer print-outs of the
changes made to their course sched-

ules.

However, printed schedules also
will be available to those who opt
to dial in following their phone
transactions.

Collins said students may go to
10 Funkhouser Building, as well as
most college dean‘s offices, to pick
up print-outs of their schedules,
weekdays from 8 am. to 4:30 pm.

Students are encouraged to check
their revised schedules carefully to
ensure that changes are correct,
Collins said.

“We‘re ready for maximum
crowds should they develop," Col-
lins said.

But her office doesn‘t expect the
numbers to be high.

Although not mandatory or high-
ly publicized, UK-VIP Add/Drop
was available in August for the
1993 fall semester.

Collins said the total of students
opting to Add/Drop in person
dropped by about a third from
1992.

Now that UK-VIP has been been
broken in and heavily publicized,
“we expect the crowd to be cut at
least by one-third," Collins said.
“But we're hoping for more than
that."

Ca11257-9500t0 use the UK-VIP
system, during dates and times
shown.

The number is not toll-free and

must be made from a touch-tone tel- ‘

ephorte. The number is the same
both on and off campus.

Bugs still infesting
registration system

By Don Puckett
Senior Staff Writer

Although UK technicians. have
made many revisions to the UK-
VIP network since advance registra-
tion in November, all of the sys-
tem's bugs have not been eliminat-
ed.

UK is waiting for the Voicetek
Corporation to send the computer
software that is necessary to solve
many of the problems students ex-
perienced in the fall with the new
phone registration system.

The software would speed up
faulty computer boards that UK

clined to discuss the specifics of
any back-up plan.

“We're trying to push the vendor
to fix the problem right now," she
said.

“We have a work-around, but as
far as we‘re concerned the vendor
has a responsibility to fix their soft-
ware."

UK spent $95,440 to purchase
the original boards from Voicetek,
315,000-320,000 cheaper than if the
boards had been purchased from an-
other company.

The Voicetek boards had never
been tested on a college telephone
registration system. They slowed
down the UK—VlP system, creating

UK Applications Manager Jayne

Because of the system's proh-
ierns, registration officials were
forced to supplement UK-VIP with
a system of computer terminals
where students could register. The
supplemental terminals cost the
University about $9,100, University
Registru Randell Dehl said.
